Parasites, and Signs of Parasites
Parasite prevention is imperative to your horses well being. Performing the proper fecal tests to determine what parasites are present, is the place to start. It is wise to treat at the beginning of the grazing season. Treat for bots and tapeworms at least once a year. Rotate between active ingredients. Dose according to accurate weight and ask your vet any questions that may arise.
Signs of Parasites include distended belly or pregnant looking abdomen, dull coat, delayed or abnormal shedding, low energy level or dull attitude, abnormal growth and development, unexplained coughing and signs of suppressed immune systems, weight management problems, colic and or diarrhea.

Will the Worms Win?
Resistance to Dewormers or Anthelmintic products is a growing problem the world over. While we might not see "Super Worms" ravaging our equine companions, there is a pressing need to update deworming strategies and horse owners' perceptions regarding available deworming tools.
Internal parasite populations develop anthelmintic resistance when recommended doses of dewormers do not kill them as readily as they used to or at all. Populations have developed that are increasingly resistant to the drugs. With no new anthelmintic drugs on the market, how does this developing resistance impact horse owners? Will Super Worms develop as a result of this resistance?
The four major drug classes are:
Macrocyclic Lactones-(Ivermectin, Moxidectin)
Benzimidazoles-(Fenbendazole, Oxibendazole)
Tetrahydropyrimidines-(Pyrantel Pamoate, Pyrantel Tartrate
Prazino-Isoquinolines-(Praziquantel)
The important point here is that not all drug classes are effective against all types of parasites. Specifically, researchers have detected strongyle eggs in the feces of treated horses as early as two weeks post-treatment, which means eggs are reappearing more than twice as quickly as when Ivermectin was first marketed in the 1980's
Fight Resistance
Key ways that horse owners can help slow the developing resistance of internal parasites to all commercially available anthelmintics:
+ Use chemical anthelmintics smarter-test for need of particular dewormers
+ Follow the directions
+ Accurately estimate your horse's weight
+ Administer the full dose
+ Follow a Deworming Schedule
+ Pick up manure regularly
+ Evaluate your deworming in conjunction with testing, otherwise you'll have no idea if what you are doing is working?
+ Perform fecal egg counts at least once a year
Testing for Internal Parasites
Many available tests are capable of detecting one or more of internal parasites.
Examples od available tests include: Fecal floatation, Fecal Centrifugation, Home Fecal Test Kits and
ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) blood test for Tapeworms.
